Why Fries Taste So Good?

I found some information in chapter 5 to be quite disturbing. Obviously the smell of a food is one of the major reasons people want to eat their food. When you cook your own food you know that the actual food is what is making the enticing smell. This is not the case with fast food. The smell is engineered in a lab in most cases and then injected into your food. This is very deceitful because people don't expect the food they consume to be filled with chemicals. I think this is why this book and other books and different works like it is so crucial to enlighten our society.

Talk of the Town

I found the article I read "Burning Love", to be super interesting. I enjoy reading pieces such as this that spread awareness about the importance of preserving our environment. It is indescribably crucial for us to know the negative affects that destroying our environment have on us. This article did exactly that. It took a problem that might not effect everyone and made it into one that makes it personal. In my article I will be talking about the harm that's being caused to the marsh in my town. While not everyone is interested in the environment, when it begins to negatively affect a person, they will without a doubt take interest. I'm hoping my article will have the same affect that the article I read did.

Fast Food Nation Chapter 3

In chapter three Schosser discusses the workers in fast food restaurants. He talks about how the majority of fast food workers are unskilled teenagers, immigrants, eldery people, or disabled people. The industry has practically done away with the need to extensively train employees by putting all the work on to the machines. The employees need to do very little which saves the corporations a great deal of money. The way that Scholosser discussed the negative effect these jobs are having on teenagers education stood out to me. The way that kids will work 12 hour shifts and put their jobs before their educations will negatively effect our country in the future.

McDonald's marketing towards children

I thought that the idea of gearing marketing towards children was very disturbing. The way that McDonald's developed the the character Ronald McDonald to bring in more business towards children is very low. I think it's terrible the way that children want to go to McDonald's now because of the toys they put in their meals is terrible because most parents want to give their kids everything they want and to make their kids happy they bring them to McDonald's and allow them to eat the low quality food that is filled with chemicals and hormones. It's taking advantage of both children and parents.

My ramble about Fast Food Nation

I chose the novel Fast Food Nation for my book club book. I have strong views on the American diet and how it's affecting our nation. I love the idea of sustainability. I have two pretty sizable gardens and this year started trying to raise my own livestock. This is pretty difficult to do in the suburban neighborhood I live in. The affect that having your own hormone and chemical free foods has a big impact on a person's health. I have four chickens and two ducks that all produce hormone free eggs that I incorporate into my breakfast and cooking. Needless to say I could go on and on about the topic of sustainability and the very poor quality of much of the food we as a nation consume. I feel like I will really enjoy this book because of my VERY strong interest on this topic.

This popped up on my stumbleupon and I think it directly relates to the topic of this book: http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/9KWSfD/www.kimberlysnyder.net/blog/2011/09/26/the-american-diet-and-whats-wrong-with-it/

My Profile Piece.

So this blog took me much longer to make than it would take any normal person my age to. I am probably the least computer savvy person at Bridgewater. Well anyway, I have contacted the person I am planning on interviewing. We've exchanged several e-mails and phone numbers and she has agreed to set up an interveiw with me this Saturday. I will be conducting the interveiw that afternoon at her house. She is a friend of my aunt's who completed the Appilachian Trail in 2000. She is a retired 60 woman who is very big into traveling, hiking and all sorts of outdoorsy things such as myself.  I am excited to be interveiwing her so I can pick her brain about the Appilatchian Trail because I am planning on starting it the winter after I graduate.
